Have makeup drawer expired?

Do you have makeup lying is too old? Then you are at risk for rashes and infections. For just as with food, are creams and makeup for old and bacteria-filled, which has consequences for your skin. Check for your health's sake therefore the shelf life of your products.

HYGIENE AND PACKAGING

Durability of makeup and beauty products varies between products. But with a little common sense and good hygiene, you can get the most out of your products. Most people know this well, that it's a big no-no to stick dirty fingers down in a jar of cream.

That is a good idea, to pay attention to the packaging, when you acquire new products. Creme, foundation and concealer on pump or tube is always preferable over a jar. That way, the product lasts longer, and it is also much easier to dose.

USE REASON

But once you have taken the necessary precautions with clean fingers, sensible packaging and so on, so keep in mind, that exactly as with food, then it is often an indicative durability, as in question.

You. if your cream smells strange before its expiration date, then of course you throw it out. But vice versa, if your lipstick looks fine in appearance, consistency and odor, but is older than it should be, then you can easily keep it. I do that myself.

I, however, am a little sipped with mascaras. Especially because they then become a pain in the ass to put on. The lumps, crumbles and sprinkles namely, when they get too old, and life is simply too short for bad mascaras.

CREMER

Shelf life of the product: 6-12 mths.
Creams in pumps last longer than creams in jars. The smaller the opening on the cream, the less is the risk of, that air and bacteria enter. Therefore choose products in tubes and pumps, when it is possible.

Is your cream in a jar, then use a spatula or cotton swab instead of your fingers, when taking cream out of the jar.

EYE SHADOWS, BLUSH AND POWDER

Shelf life of the product: infinite – but quality and consistency can change.
As long as you use clean brushes, so can your eye shadows, blushes, powder foundations, bronzers m.m. hold for many years. However, many products tend to get a little dry over time, so just because there are no bacteria in, the product does not necessarily have the same endurance, when it comes to the quality itself.

MASCARA

Shelf life of the product: 3-6 mths.
Mascara and eye makeup, who are in contact with the mucous membranes, can carry bacteria to and from the eye.
You need to pay extra attention to your mascara, since it is a great sinner, when it comes to holding on to the bacteria. It's tempting, but not wise, to share mascara with your girlfriend. In the worst case, you can infect each other with baktusser, just as you should, if possible, refrain from liiiige to try the tester mascara, when you are out shopping makeup. Unless you can get a clean tester and a disposable mascara applicator (long word!), then you put yourself at quite a high risk of eye infections etc..

If you have had an eye infection, your mascara must be replaced, no matter how old it is.

EYELINERS, LIPLINERS M.M.

Shelf life of the product: almost unlimited
Both the mechanical ones (those that one can screw up) and the sharpened pencils are durable for several years, if you make sure to sharpen them or cut a small piece of the tip on the mechanical pencils. However, over time, they will dry out and change color, so replace them when you think, that they change consistency and quality.

LIPSTICK, LIQUID LIPSTICK OG LIPGLOSS

Shelf life of the product: 12-24 mths.
Always apply lip products on completely clean lips. Feel free to use a brush to apply with, so that the product stays as clean as possible. Do not have a brush, then wipe the lipstick off with a kleenex – deepen it if necessary. in alcohol before wiping, then you are absolutely sure it is clean.

Even more convenient is to choose products on tube instead of with an applicator. Thereby you print out only that amount, which you need, rather than applying with an applicator, which will then transfer any bacteria from the lips down into the packaging.

More tips to extend the shelf life of your beauty products:

  • Wash your makeup brushes once a week with brush shampoo, so you avoid spreading bacteria more than absolutely necessary.
  • Although it's tempting, so do not borrow makeup from or to your girlfriends – or at least think about what products you borrow or lend out. See the list above to check, which are most safe when it comes to hygiene.
  • If you are in doubt whether you can use a product completely before the expiration date, or if you, like me, like to have choices when it comes to eg mascaras, so buy the products in travel sizes. That way you avoid spills and you are sure to use up the entire product. It is both better for the environment and for the wallet!
